Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick Review
This has probably been the most raved about matte liquid lipstick from the drugstore for the past month. Rumors say that this liquid lipstick gives the most comfortable, non-drying but long-wearing matte finish. Intrigued? Keep reading!
The Maybelline Matte Ink Liquid Lipsticks come housed in pretty chunky square tubes that I am not the biggest fan of. For the two shades that I have, the colour of the tube correlates pretty well to the actually colour of the lip product. The cap clicks shut so it will not spill all over your purse.
The applicator is in a teardrop shape with a hole in the center to hold some product. Usually, I like this type of applicator over doe foot applicators but this one is stiff and picks up very little product. Fortunately, because of how stiff and pointy the end of the applicator is, it is very easy to outline your lips before you fill them in with the flat side of the brush. Whether or not this bothers you will depend on what you prefer, but I don’t mind re-dipping the wand in when I apply it, so it doesn’t bother me.
Despite the name, the Maybelline Matte Ink comes out the same consistency as most regular liquid lipsticks on the market; however, it is very sticky as soon as it is applied on to the lips, and the stickiness remains for another hour (depending on how much is being worn off). While this doesn’t bother some people, the stickiness bothered me more than I expected it to. It felt even stickier than the stickiest glosses I’ve every tried. If it weren’t for the phenomenal longevity and comfortability (please see below) that this product provides, I would probably never try these liquid lipsticks.
Before we discuss the longevity, I’d like to point out that while the colour selection reaches a wide range of colours, they skip so many colours in between because there are only ten shades in total. I purchased the lightest shade called Loyalist (very light pink-y nude) and the third lightest shade called Lover (a purple-y pink mauve). Many of you know that I am a nude lip colour lover, and if you are like me, there are not very many nudes to select from in this range (as well as in every other colour family). I do like to mix the two shades I have by applying Lover all over, and placing Loyalist in the center, softening the edges with my fingers.
The Maybelline Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick lasts very well for how comfortable it feels on the lips. It is not drying on the lips whatsoever! Of course, this will rub off the lips if you eat something super greasy, but if not, this will last you the whole day. It lasted me more than 6 hours while I was eating snacks, a salad and drinking water before it started wearing off.
Unfortunately, this product wears off pretty unevenly. Every time that I’ve worn this product, I’ve ended up with a beautiful art piece on my lips consisting of patches of my bare lip and patches where colour is still clinging onto. This is not so much a problem with the two shades that I own, but I would feel like this would make for a very unattractive lip look if this happened to you with the darker shades.
The longevity combined with the comfortable wear will make me pick this product up over and over again despite the poor colour selection and the stickiness. I think that if you are intrigued, you should definitely give this a try!
